Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 - 1669)
PORTRAIT OF JAN LUTMA, GOLDSMITH. White & Boon 276iii. Etching and drypoint, 196 x 150 mm (7.7 x 5.9"), plus thread margin at bottom, on laid paper with a "Words" watermark, Ash & Fletcher E.a, ca. 1656. A very good impression of this famous image, in good condition, except for slight toning of the paper.
Although Nowell-Usticke describes the third state as a Watelet retouch, White & Boon do not mention this, and in fact, our impression is clearly on paper with a watermark that Ash & Fletcher date to 1656, and they cite an impression in the third state in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
Provenance: in ink on verso "Chez Naudet . . . au Louvre 1817" (Lugt 1937). Naudet sold fine prints at the Louvre beginning in about 1769.
