Giulio Sanuto

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST IN THE WILDERNESS. Bartsch catalogues the print as Battista Franco (no. 35), but Nagler (no. 4) and Passavant (no. 9) correctly recognize it as Giulio Sanuto. Engraving, 391 x 313/315 mm (15.39 x 12.36") trimmed along the plate mark. The figure comes from a composition by the Italian Mannerist painter and sculptor Daniele da Volterra (1509 - 1566) in the Palazzo Massime alle Colonne, Rome See M. Bury, Giulio Sanuto. A Venetian Engraver of the Sixteenth Century (Edinburgh: NGS, 1990), no. 10. He reproduces an impression at Berlin and mentions two others, at Manchester and Vienna. With a few edge tears, and flaws. Rare.
