Jusepe de Ribera (1591 - 1652) THE DRUNKEN SILENUS. 1628. Brown 14ii (of iii). Etching with drypoint, engraving, and burnishing. 266 x 350 mm (10 1/2 x 13 3/4"), trimmed along or outside the borderline all around. A very good impression of this scarce print. In good condition except for a few tiny repaired edge tears. Jonathan Brown, Jusepe de Ribera Prints and Drawings: "The Drunken Silenus is Ribera's tour de force as an etcher, a dazzling demonstration of his ability to produce effects of texture, of light, and of density and softness."
Provenance: T. Jefferson Coolidge, Jr. (Lugt 1429). R. E. Lewis purchased this print at P. & D. Colnaghi and Co., London in 1968.
