Philibert-Louis Debucourt
(1755 - 1832)
LA PROMENADE PUBLIQUE (THE PUBLIC PROMENADE). 1792. Fenaille 1899 no. 35iii; Bibliothèque Nationale Inventaire 26; Carlson & Ittmann: Regency to Empire French Printmaking 1715-1814, no. 103; Graselli et. al.: Colorful Impressions, no. 83. Etching, engraving, and aquatint printed in yellow, blue, red, and black inks, with some watercolor by hand, from four plates, 459 x 635 mm (18 x 25") the sheet, trimmed just within the plate mark. Laid down, with two vertical centerfolds, tip of lower left corner missing; otherwise in good condition. A fine impression with very good color and depth.
Though France, England, and the colonies were gearing up for war, Debucourt humorously showed the contrasting lifestyle of the aristocrats, including many identifiable persons, in the Palais Royale gardens. Inspired by Rowlandson's color aquatint of Vauxhall Gardens.
$12,000.
