THE TRIUMPH OF SCIPIO, after Raphael. ca. 1550. Bartsch 74 (du Maitre au Dé). Engraving, 220 x 262 mm (8 11/16 x 10 15/16"), plus margins. A very good impression in very good condition except for two printers creases and slight puckering along upper plate mark. Bartsch says that this print was among the group that were retouched “avec beaucoup de soin et d’art” by Philippe Thomassin.

Scipio led the Roman army in expelling Hannibal from Italy, before destroying the Carthaginian army in Africa. He returned to a great triumph in Rome and was afterward referred to as Scipio Africanus in recognition of his victory.
