LA DANSE PAYSANE (THE COUNTRY DANCE). ca. 1711. Le Blanc 47, Bibliothèque Nationale Inventaire 6i (of ii). Engraving, 408 x 315 mm (16.0 x 12.4") plus margins. "GraveĆ© d'Après le Tableau originale [sic] Peint par Watteau . . .", . Watteau invented the fête galante (courtship party), a genre of painting depicting elegant ladies and gentlemen socializing in pastoral settings. In this example, a couple dances to the sound of a hurdy-gurdy in a forest clearing. The painting by Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684–1721) is in the Huntington Library in San Marino, California.
