Claude Lorraine (1600 - 1682)
LE SOLEIL LEVANT (Harbour scene with rising sun). 1634.
Mannocci 15iv (of viii), before the date in the lower margin.
Etching, 132 x 199 mm (5 3/16 x 7 13/16") trimmed along
the platemark. A fine impression, in very good condition except
for a pale discoloration in the sky at right.
"By the time Claude started working on this plate he
had perfected his mastery of etching. This technical perfection,
combined with one of his favorite subjets, the harbour-scene,
resulted in this masterpiece, regarded by many people over
the last three hundred years as one of his finest plates"-
