Jean-Francois Millet (1814 - 1875)

LES GLANEUSES (The Gleaners). 1855. Delteil 12ii. Etching, 191 x 254 mm (7 1/2 x 10") plus margins. A fine, warm impression, printed in dark brown ink with plate tone on Japan paper. In very good condition, except for a small pale stain at the upper right corner.

The etching of The Gleaners came before the painting of the same subject, which is now in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris, and was painted in 1857. Walking the fields around the small town of Barbizon, one theme returned to Millet's artistic sensibility repeatedly: gleaning, the age-old right of peasants to collect the grain left in the fields after the harvest. The image shows Millet's sensitivity to the repetition and fatigue in the peasants' daily lives, and their struggle to survive.

$14,000.
