Edgar Degas
(1834 - 1917)

LE SPORTSMAN MONTANT SON CHEVAL (THE SPORTSMAN MOUNTS HIS HORSE). 1856. Delteil 9, Adhémar 3, Reed & Shapiro 3v, from the cancelled plate. Soft ground etching, drypoint, and roulette, 84 x 76 mm (3.31 x 2.99") plus full margins. In very good condition except for a soft crease in the margin and toning around margin edges. From an edition of 150 impressions printed in 1877 for Ambroise Vollard after the artist's death. Rare; only four lifetime impressions of this plate have been found.

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston identified four proofs from the first and second states and borrowed a proof from the cancelled plate from the Metropolitan Museum of Art for their 1984-5 exhibition of Degas's prints. The MFA said they were unable to locate any examples of the third, fourth, or fifth states.

$3,500.
